Children and Family Services helps families understand child safety reporting process

San Bernardino County Children and Family Services (CFS) is encouraging residents to speak up when they have concerns about a child’s safety, emphasizing that early intervention can help connect children and families with the support they need.

When someone contacts the CFS hotline, they speak with a trained social worker who listens to their concerns, gathers information about the situation and assesses how best to support the child and family using a structured decision-making process to determine the most appropriate response. Reports of suspected child abuse or neglect may be made anonymously and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis to ensure that children receive the appropriate level of support and protection.

Not every report results in a formal investigation. Depending on the circumstances, families may be referred to the department’s Alternative Response team, which connects them with community-based resources and support without opening a formal investigation. In situations where there are concerns about a child’s immediate safety, an in-person investigation may be necessary. Regardless of the response, CFS works to engage families with respect while prioritizing the well-being of children and preserving families.

It is important to understand that contacting CFS does not automatically lead to a child being removed from the home. Removal occurs only when a child cannot be safely cared for at home. Whenever possible, CFS works with families to promote stability and achieve reunification when it is safe to do so.

By partnering with families, community organizations and concerned residents, CFS strives to keep children safe while strengthening families throughout San Bernardino County. If you suspect a child is being abused or neglected, please call the Child Abuse Hotline at 800-827-8724.
