On Tuesday, July 29, a large crowd of families and community members filled Ayala Park to celebrate the opening of the park’s new splash pad, highlighting just how much this feature was needed and appreciated in Bloomington.
“This splash pad is more than just a place to cool off,” said Recreation Superintendent Aaron Speer. “It’s a space designed for fun, inclusivity, and community.”
The 1,257-square-foot splash pad includes 23 spray features, two slides, tipping water buckets, and an outdoor shower. It was built with accessibility and sustainability in mind, using a 4,000-gallon recycled recirculated water system, UV sanitation, high-efficiency filtration, and smart timers to reduce water waste.
The $1.4 million project was completed in just five months, with construction wrapping up in July. It now serves as a much-needed cooling zone for families during the Inland Empire’s hot summer months.
Vice Chair and Fifth District Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr. praised the growing list of amenities at Ayala Park. “This splash pad is free, ADA-accessible, and promotes outdoor play, wellness, and community connection,” he said.
The celebration wrapped up in high spirits as Baca, Jr. and Bloomington MAC members joined the fun—getting soaked alongside local kids to mark the opening with a splash.
