San Bernardino County Children’s Network hosted a Children’s Memorial Flag-Raising Ceremony on April 24 at the San Bernardino County Government Center. The raising of the Children’s Memorial Flag coincides with Child Abuse Prevention Month and is part of a statewide effort in which counties pay tribute to young children lost to child abuse and neglect.

Children’s Network Officer Ashley Brooksher opened the event with a call to action, “to strengthen families, deepen partnerships and continue the work of prevention.”

Board of Supervisors Vice Chair and Fifth District Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr. reminded the attendees of the importance of collaboration. “Prevention is not a single program, department or community; it is a collective effort,” Baca, Jr. said.

Building on that message, Second District Supervisor Jesse Armendarez highlighted the need for continued commitment to children currently at risk. “Today, as we remember the children we have lost, we must also commit ourselves to the children who are still here, those who depend on us to create a safer, more supportive world,” said Armendarez.

Jonathan Byers, assistant director of Children and Family Services, reinforced the urgency of prevention efforts. “Each loss is a child who should have had a future — a child who should have experienced safety, joy and love,” said Byers. “It reminds us why prevention is not optional — it is essential.”

The ceremony concluded with a benediction by Pastor Clyde Stewart of Westside Worship Center, followed by a powerful moment of silence, the raising of the memorial flag and a release of butterflies.

The Children’s Network coordinates preventative programs and services through collaboration and engagement with community and county partners to strengthen and promote child, family and community well-being.
